Oracle Linux 5.6 installation

Here we will consider installation of the server for running Oracle database or related product.

When using custom selection of packages don't forget to select X11 and gnome. By default they are not selected and you end with command line based system running on level 3.

• Partitioning: on Oracle Linux 5.6 to get the ability to use ext4 filesystem use boot ext4
• Partitioning is a little bit tricky. On OEL 6 selection of swap, boot and root partition as "regular" partitions and everything else under LVL result is a bug.
• Note: Default names of partitions suggested by Oracle are bad -- put a good names manually
• Use Ext4 for version 6.
• Installation ejects DVD after completion

Individual packages are available from Oracle repositories.  You need pdksh in are installing on Oracle Linux 6

Steps after installation

• Configure sudo via /etc/sudoers and wheel group.  If you do many boxes create a shell script that copies relevant files from already configured box. Something like init_copy.sh script

• Configure the network and add backup network
  • Important !!! Change /etc/host file so that fully qualified name pointed to main interface and localhost was defined only as localhost.localdomain   localhost. Add second entry fot he backup network  (lusytp08bu in the example below):

    10.201.101.73   lusytp08.my.firm.com  lusytp08        # Added by NetworkManager

  • Pay special attention to correctness of netmask and default gateway.
  • Add proxy to the setup
  • Check DNS resolution

• Disable useless or harmful daemons

  • avahi-dnsconfd
  • Dnsmasq Dnsmasq - a DNS forwarder for NAT firewalls.
  • Possibly firewall is this is an internal server
  • SElinux (too complex to be useful)
• Register system
  • set up proxy if necessary
  • verify that oracle.com is reachable using firebox.
• Install required oracle libraries.
• Install additional packages if they did not get into initial selection
  • yum install policycoreutils-gui.x86_64
  • yum install system-config-firewall
• Patch the server
• Set up Oracle user account, dba group and permisttions of used directories
• Set kernel parameters in the /etc/sysctl.conf file See  Oracle kernel parameters tuning on Linux

• Add the following lines to /etc/security/limits.conf

Oracle installation requres pdksh for some unknown reason. It's better to take it from version 5.6, See Index of -repo-OracleLinux-OL5-6-base-x86_64. The package is pdksh-5.2.14-36.el5.x86_64.rpm

As Avi suggested, following the Oracle installation for OEL 5 is pretty fine - eventhough 11gR2 on OEL6 is not yet cetified.

I just received an exception on the missing package pdksh-5.2.14-30.6.x86_64.rpm. It was not required on OEL5, I'm not a Linux specialist but I have had to take it from OEL4.7, then everything is working fine.

IBM Techdocs White Paper Installing Red Hat Linux from a USB flashdrive

Abstract: This document describes a technique for installing Red Hat® Linux from a portable USB flashdrive. The flashdrive has the advantage of being a writeable device, making it much more flexible than CD-ROM. You can easily create custom boot media, using Red Hat kickstart and the SYSLINUX menus, without having to create a new El Torito bootable ISO image or burn physical media. And making modifications on-the-fly is not a problem.

You can set up multiple installation tasks on a single flashdrive, limited only by your device's space. A 4GB flashdrive is enough to hold a single set of RHEL installation media; an 8 GB drive should be enough space for two.

The USB flashdrive is in many ways ideal for field support. It is portable, fast, easy to modify and can perform a wide variety of pre-execution tasks-including firmware deployment, diagnostics, backup and recovery-in addition to OS installation.

Some of the techniques described here cover the operation of the SYSLINUX bootloader and its menu system. These are good techniques to learn, as SYSLINUX also supports boot via CD-ROM (ISOLINUX) and network-based PXE boot (PXELINUX). With a few exceptions, the SYSLINUX bootloaders work the same way across all the media types. So, learning to work with SYSLINUX will help you build custom boot media, regardless of which media type is best suited for the task.
