How to convert MP4 audio files to MP3 using iTunes version 7 « My Right Brain

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING STEPS WORK ONLY FOR NON-PROTECTED FILES

Here’s something I learnt — how to convert MP4 audio files to MP3 using iTunes version 7.x (OS X):

Background: I’d created my Saturday In May in GarageBand and it was saved as an MP4 audio file. Apparently some of my friends were unable to play in that format so I searched for a way to make the conversion. Kevin described broadly how it could be done via iTunes.

I’d also found this freeware called Switch (www.nch.com.au/switch), which worked quite well but I realised iTunes, while a bit cumbersome compared to using a software convertor, allowed more control over the conversion (e.g. setting the bit rate and overall sound quality). So here’s a step-by-step process of how a conversion could be done using iTunes (click on the images for larger sizes):

If you have that much music, you'll need more than a player that can merely play it but one that can manage it and make it easily searched and used. I'd recommend Winamp, MediaMonkey or Foobar2000. Winamp would be my personal choice. The free version has a restriction on CD ripping speeds, everything else works fine.

Foobar2000 is a great player but unfortunately needs a lot of tinkering and tweaking to get everything just right.

You need ffdshow and Matroska Splitter. Than any MP4 content (audio and
video) should play in any player. Media Player may still complayn about the
file extention, but it will still play the file if you force it.

How do i get Windows Media Player to play .mp4a file types, at the moment i
am only able to Play through Itunes.
Had a look around for available codecs but i was unable to find one,
any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

PS:
Matroska Splitter is just to open the MP4 container, but also supports MPEG
and AVI.
ffdshow supports any compression format that you have or have not heard of
Wink + subtitles, +post processing effects... It is the greatest freeware
codec.
