Modem problems

My modem doesn't work correctly under Windows 95. Sometimes I can get a connection, but the modem will hang up shortly after. Also my modem LEDs flicker when I move the mouse. What is happening?

If your modem is connected to COM4 and you have a 8514 or S3 graphic card, then this is because of a hardware-conflict between the graphic card and COM4.

By connecting the modem to a different COM-port you should be able to get it working.

This problem didn't appear under Windows 3.x because graphic drivers didn't make full use of the graphic card back then and the hardware-conflict only appears on certain accelerator functions of the graphic card. Windows 95 uses much more of the capabilities of the graphic card which causes this hardware-conflict to surface.
